Ahh, yes! The joys of natural living. Trimming away the synthetic ingredients in hair, skin, and make-up products. I haven’t been able to switch my shampoo to all natual yet. I love the squeaky clean feel from the sulfate-laden shampoos. Believe me, I’ve tried…and it was definately a natural shampoo FAIL. Switching to a natural deodorant was a MUST for me after reading about the dangers of using deodorant with aluminum.
Aluminum Free
Since I haven’t had a lot of luck with matching the effectiveness of the chemical stuff, I was a bit reluctant to try all natural deodorant. So reluctant that I laughed the first time I saw the THREE ingredients. Yea right! How is that gonna come close to my aluminum-filled stick I use every day. Well, I’m here to say that this was a HUGE SUCCESS!!! In fact, it’s the most success I’ve had with going all natural. It’s even BETTER than my store bought deodorant. I’m loving this switch. My only regret is that I didn’t use this sooner.
There are several recipes online. I’ve tried a few and came up with my own mix that works best.
Natural Deodorant Recipe
6 T Baking Soda
6 T Cornstarch
4 T Coconut Oil (Organic, cold pressed)
1-2 drops Lavender Oil or Tea Tree Oil (This is optional and just for an added scent. Without scented oils, this mix still has a great, yet very light coconut scent.
(I use oils EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. Learn more about why I need them here.)
I like to store mine in a glass jar with a screw cap. It travels well and I’m not concerned about plastic leaching into the deodorant. If you like the traditional deodorant container, this would also work great – just keep it in a cool space like the refrigerator to keep it extra solid.
What About My Clothes?
If you’re thinking, “Eww, oil?…on my clothes?”, let me tell ya about my experience…
I thought the same thing but tried anyway. I have yet to notice ANY markings on my clothing in the last few months that I’ve been using this recipe.
The tea tree oil adds a more gender-neutral scent.
Let me know if you try the natural deodorant and not “if” but “how much” you love it!!!

Disclosure – I have not had a problem but, to be on the safe side, this may cause discoloration in your clothing. I would start with an inexpensive, absorbent shirt to see how it goes. This may cause irritation on your skin it you are sensitive to any of the ingredients. At first, I had a small rash under my arms that lasted several weeks. I was told that is to be expected while detoxing from aluminum deodorant. Eventually, the rash cleared and my underarm skin is now clear and smooth. After years of use now, I only experienced a small the one time when I first switched to a natural deodorant.
About Essential Oils
Essential Oils have knocked my socks off! I’m embarrassed to say I used to use whatever oils I could find in my grocery store. After learning about therapeutic grade oils, my life has been forever changed! I’ve since detoxed my body and my home and I feel AMAZING! Come see what I mean.

Hi, I found you on Texas Blogging Gals and came by to say hello. I am now a follower and hope you'll come by and say howdy sometime.
Very very interesting concerning the natural deo. Not sure I could do that…. There is a shop in Rice Village in Houston that has lots of natural products. I wrote about it on my blog.
Take care.

I saw you at It's a Hodgepodge Life and had to pop over…love the name! I am totally intrigued…I will have to mull this one over. I do agree with the shampoo, I tried a natural one and it just did not do the trick.
Really loving your blog…I am a new follower.

Thanks for trying this! I am fairly new to natural living and was wondering about deo. I think I will give this a shot! BTW you have a new follower 🙂
Very cool! Have you tried it in really hot weather yet?
Thanks for linking up to Make it Yours Day at My Backyard Eden!
That is cool! I may have to try it!
Natural deodarant is one of the few things I just haven't had any luck with yet. But I'm going to try this recipe thanks to your glowing recommendation. Give the natural shampoo another try. I had to try lots of different brands before finding some I liked.
I love the idea of natural shampoo also! However, after many tries I still go back and forth. Which ones do you like the best? 🙂
Try Wen by Chaz Dean. AMAZING stuff!
L’oreal also has a version of Wen. It worked great – you just have to get over the super strong scent.
Try Wen by Chaz Dean. AMAZING stuff!!! Much better than any store bought products! (And if you are wary of the price, try buying it off of QVC – much cheaper with their sales!)
I’ve recently heard of people’s hair falling out from this. Is it true or blown out of proportion?
Wow…it actually works?? That is amazing!! I love the idea of going natural but am afraid that it will not be as effective! Thanks!!
I forwarded your link over to my friend who is expecting and does not want to use deo with aluminum in it!
Hey, followed you over here from your comment on Pioneer Woman's homemade tortilla post. 🙂
Very cool post about the deodorant. I've recently switched to Tom's, but I'll definitely give this a try.
As to the shampoo thing, been there, done that, unfortunately have the t-shirt. I hated all of the natural recipes/alternatives that I tried. However, one of the books that I read (Better Basics for the Home, very cool book) suggested Aubrey Organics shampoo as an alternative and as close to homemade as you can get commercially. I tried it and loved it, but the down side is that it is expensive. Just thought that I'd throw that out there. 😉
That is so cool! I never would have dreamed of making my own deodorant. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Found you from Holly's Tickled Pink.
Hello! I found you ton Under The Table…and have become your newest follower. I LOVE your site and will be back soon!

my father is allergic to deodorant… so always hunting for something to help him smell manly in a good way.. what about sandalwood.. or lemon as a send for men??
Thank you for this recipe! I'll definitely give it a try since Tom's costs $5 a bar.
As for the shampoo, when I learned that the 'squeaky clean' isn't clean at all, but the roughness that the shampoo is causing I got over it pretty fast. It removes the healthy oils and raises the 'scales' on your hair and what we feel as clean is the scales catching on the skin of our hands and vibrating the strands like a violin string. Yuck. I went 'no poo' (baking soda and vinegar) and will never go back!
Found you through pinterest. Just wanted to add my 2 cents – this works! I had the same so so results with store bought "natural" deodorants. I have mixed up my own, roughly the same amounts, exact same ingredients except that I used lemongrass essential oil. I was amazed at how well it worked, in extreme conditions too!
Some people find the baking soda irritating. I backed off on the amount of baking soda – no irritation and worked just as well.
Hi! love your.blog and I am anxious to try.this! also wanted to tell you a couple of years ago I discovered Trader Joes Tea Tree Shampoo, and its sulfate-free, I've been using it a long time! maybe give it a shot. if you don't have a TKs near u, I think u can find it on Amazon too. thanks again for.the post!
Hello! This recipe looks quite nifty, thanks! I just have one question, how do you actually apply it? It looks almost like cream from a bottle so would you scoop some with your fingers and rub it all over your arm pits? Is there another way? Thanks loads!
curious to know if this would act as an antiperspirant also… or just deodorant… meaning it would help you not stink. 🙂 Thanks for letting me know. I'm curious to try this.
