The after school routine in our house is very, very important. That time can single handedly guide the rest of the evening. I’ve learned the hard way to make sure there is a strong routine in place. The kids pushed back at first but they have come to love the routine and will even follow the it if I’m sick or not there.
Routine
When my first child started school, I had no idea how important it was to have an after school routine in place for her. She arrived home starving, tired, and over-stimulated. I spent a few months trying to figure out how to handle this otherwise happy kid during the dreaded 3:00 hour. After years of implementing this after school routine, and now with two kids in school, I want to share what works for us.
With five simple steps, our routine has been time tested to be very successful for our family. All families have different needs so this is an example of what works for us.
After School Routine Step 1: Wash Hands WITH Soap
This seems like a no-brainer but I had to make it a very important first step as soon as my kids walk in the door. After a few rounds of the flu, I made this a non-negotiable step. They are STARVING when they get home so while I start their Tai Pei Frozen Fried Rice in the microwave, they can get a head start on washing their hands.

After School Routine Step 2: FOOD!
They’re “literally starving” every day when they arrive home. It’s physically impossible to get them to adhere to any other step (except washing hands) until they’ve been re-fueled. I like to give them something filling because they usually end up playing for a few hours in the evening. Surprisingly, this has never interfered with their dinner appetite.
On Fridays, they get Tai Pei single serve frozen Asian food entrees and it’s been a HUGE help with the after school routine. They’re delicious and if I’m not right there, the packaging is perfect for my school age kids to grab one out of the freezer and pop it in the microwave. It’s just the right amount for them to feel recharged and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

They offer a range of tasty flavors, including flavor-infused rice. My kids love all of them. I love that the entrees are made with real ingredients. Their Friday after school snack is a special treat and eliminates the boredom of their typical snacks.

After School Routine Step 3: Chores
After enjoying their Tai Pei Asian Food after school snack, my kids know the next step is chores. Nothing extensive, just 3-4 chores each to ensure a smooth evening. Feed the dog, put away laundry, and empty the kitchen recycling are a few of their chores in their after school routine.

After School Routine Step 4: Homework
Once steps 1-3 are complete, they can begin their homework. It’s not usually a ton of work. It typically takes about 20 minutes. There’s no way I can have them start homework RIGHT after school. I make sure they have their snack like the Tai Pei Asian food entree first and then they’re refueled and ready to tackle any work they’ve brought home.

After School Routine Step 5: Play
Finally! After everything is complete, it’s time to play! The neighbor kids even know about our routine. They know to not even ring the doorbell after school because they know my kids will be out to play when they’re done their after school routine.
Years of trial and error have gone into developing our after school routine. This system has been so stress-relieving for our whole family. I try to strictly follow it every school day and it has worked great!
